1.5. Genesis: Abram & Lot Pick Land

www.biblefunforkids.com
Abram Travels to a New Land is lesson 5 in the first quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening.
We began the lesson with a basket (or bag or small suitcase) that I had filled with different things that we or Abraham might take on a trip. It was fun watching them laugh at the thought of a Bible person taking all those electronics! I just added stuff as I thought of it. Basics: Towel/washcloth/toothbrush/toothpaste/hairbrush/shampoo, Small blanker, Change of clothes/shoes, House/car keys, Electronics: iPad/phone/chargers/, Snacks/water (for everyone), Toy car/horse/cow/dog, Map/compass

We are learning about people in the book of Genesis (13). There are two parts of the Bible (Old & New Testament). Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament.
Abram was very rich! He had a lot of animals, gold and silver. Lot was Abram’s nephew. He was rich in sheep, animals and tents.
Abram and Lot’s herdsmen began to argue because there were so many animals to take care of and not enough room for all of them. They both wanted the best food and water for their animals.
Abram talked to Lot and said he didn’t want any fighting between himself and Lot, or their herdsmen. Abram said they were family and there is so much land. If Lot would take the land on one side, Abram would take the other side. “If you go to the right, I will go to the left. If you want the left, I will move to the right.”
When Lot looked, he wanted the plain of Jordan. It was good looking land that was well watered. They separated and Abram lived in Canaan.
God talked to Abram after he left Lot. God told him to look in all directions from where you are now: north, south, east and west. God said He would give Abram and his descendants (family) the land.
His descendants would be like the dust of the earth. You can’t even count each piece of dust, can you? God said that was how big a family Abram would have.
Later, God told Abram to look toward heaven and count the stars. (15:5-6) Can you count the stars? No, but God said that was how many descendants Abram would have. Abram’s son would have children, they would have kids, until there were a lot of descendants.
Abram believed what God told him. He said that Abram would be “a father of many nations”
Abram moved his tent and lived in Hebron. Abram worshipped God. God was happy that Abram let Lot choose the land he wanted. God was happy that they didn’t argue about the land.
Abram stayed faithful to God. God was happy with Abram’s decisions.

They love the maps, so we used this with the lesson. You can add some plastic animals to help set the scene. Click here to see it.

We used this suitcase for our project. It is a great review and we discussed things they would have traveled with during Abram's time. Click here to see it.

  1. I just noticed the "and more" on your blog title, and it makes me smile, because whenever I teach kids, I make sure that I throw in plenty for the adults who are in the room, and most adults learn better when the teaching is accessible.
