Jesus went to the Jordan River and asked John to baptize Him. They were related through their mothers. Luke 1:36 God was pleased and Jesus began His ministry when He was 30 years old. (Luke 3:23)

He went directly to the wilderness and fasted for 40 days. Satan went to the wilderness to tempt Jesus. After three times and Jesus telling him no, Satan left Jesus and the angels came and ministered to Him.

Jesus went back to Nazareth in Galilee where he lived growing up. He had the ‘power of the Spirit’ and He was known throughout the area. (Matthew 4:14) Jesus taught in the synagogues and was worshipped by everyone.

He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath like He usually did and He stood up to read. He was given the book of Isaiah the prophet. Jesus read Isaiah 61:1-2a:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Jesus closed the book when He finished reading and returned it to the attendant. He sat down and everyone was watching Him. Jesus told them that the scripture was fulfilled today. The people were amazed at what Jesus was telling them! They said “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
Jesus told them that they would probably want proof: like to heal himself; or to do the same miracles that they had heard had been done in Capernaum.  But, Jesus told them that no prophet is accepted in his own country. Jesus told them that there were many widows in the time of Elijah the prophet when there was famine in the land for three years and six months. But, Elijah only visited one widow in Zarephath in Sidon. There were a lot of lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet. Only Naaman the Syrian was cured of leprosy.

All the people in the synagogue became angry when they heard what Jesus said and they threw Him out of the city. They took Jesus to a hill and wanted to throw Him off of the cliff. But, Jesus just ‘passed through their midst and went on His way!’

Jesus went to Capernaum (a city in Galilee) and was again teaching on the Sabbath days. The people were amazed at His teachings! He knew what He was talking about! There was a man that had an unclean demon. The demon shouted at Jesus “Leave us alone! What do we have to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to end us? You are the Holy One of God!” Jesus replied “Be quiet and come out.” The demon went out and didn’t hurt the man. The people told everyone that Jesus had the power and ability to remove the unclean demons.

Jesus went to Peter’s house. Peter’s mother-in-law was sick with a high fever. Jesus stood over her and healed her. She immediately got up and served them food!
Jesus healed many people. They were brought to Jesus and He laid His hands on them all and healed them. He cast out many demons, too. They knew He was Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The next day He left and went to a place by Himself. The people tried to stop Him from leaving and crowds of people came to Him. Jesus told them that He had to preach about the kingdom of God to other cities, too. That was why He came. He preached in the synagogues in Galilee.

 Thanks to Jean Dickson for sharing her songs! This song is about controlling your anger which is so appropriate for this lesson! This includes the color flipchart and one-page black & white printable. It also includes lips that can be attached to a craft stick for the students to hold. I kept the visuals to Jesus and angry men so this song can be used for more than just this lesson. Click here to download.

The worksheet above is a discussion starter. Students can write different things or characteristics they know about Jesus. Or, different miracles He did since there are several in this lesson. Or, the people were so angry when Jesus told them who He was. They were just going to (try to)throw Him over a cliff. Talk about different scenarios in their life and how they should handle them. This includes the color and black & white. Click here to download.
