Last week we studied Jesus and the trials that He went through. We also looked at some of the things that happened to Jesus while He was on the cross. Today, we are going to talk about what happened after Jesus died. These facts are found in Matthew 27:57-28:15; Mark 15:42-16:13; Luke 23:50-24:48; John 19:38-20:31.
Joseph of Arimathea was a rich man, a council member and a follower of Jesus. (Mark 15:43) Joseph asked Pilate if he could have the body of Jesus. Pilate said yes, and Joseph bought fine linen and took Jesus down from the cross. (Mark 15:46)
also helped Joseph. He brought about 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes. (John
19:39) They wrapped Jesus in strips of linen with the spices, and laid Jesus in
a new tomb.
The tomb was in the garden where Jesus had been crucified and was cut out of rock. (John 19:41) A stone was rolled in front of the opening. Mary and Mary Magdalene watched to see where Jesus was buried.
That was on Friday, and on Saturday, which was the Sabbath, the chief priests remembered that Jesus had said that He would rise up after 3 days. They went to Pilate and asked for soldiers to stand guard so that the Disciples couldn’t steal the body and pretend that Jesus had really come back from the dead. So, Pilate agreed. There was a Roman seal put on the tomb and guards were sent to watch the tomb. (Mathew 27:62-66)
At dawn on the first day of the week, which is Sunday, while it's still dark, the first day of the week, several women that were friends of Jesus, headed for the tomb. (John 20:1) The women were wondering how they were going to move the stone that was blocking the door. They wanted to put spices that they brought with them on the body of Jesus. (Mark 16:1-3)
There was a great earthquake, and an angel came down from Heaven! The angel was glowing and had white clothes on. The angel rolled back the stone and sat on it! The guards were so scared that they passed out! (Matthew 28:3-4)
When the women arrived at the tomb, they saw the stone was already moved and when they went into the tomb, they found it empty. An angel was inside and told the women not to be afraid. He knew that they were looking for Jesus and he told them that Jesus wasn’t there because He had arisen. They could come and see where He had been laying.
The angel told the women to hurry, go tell the Disciples that Jesus is alive and that He will meet them in Galilee. They were afraid, but amazed and went to tell the Disciples what the angel said.
women told the eleven Disciples about what they had seen at the tomb, and the
Disciples thought they were making it up! (Luke 24:8-12) They didn't believe
the women. So, Peter and John ran to the tomb. Peter saw the linen
cloths without Jesus first, then John looked in the tomb. They were
amazed! (John 20:3-10)
Next week we will study Jesus' meeting with His Disciples and Jesus returning to Heaven.
