VBS: 1. Moses Saved in a Basket

This is the first lesson for VBS: Moses. This includes decorations, lesson, visuals, and more.

To decorate for this, I started with the Egyptian background. I added butcher paper to the bottom and trimmed the top with a wave. I added the blue cellophane (basket wrap) and carried it to the floor to look like the water and added an old basket with a lid in the 'water'. Baby Moses is inside also.
The basket is sitting on a large piece of Styrofoam so I could insert the 'reeds' (purchased at Dollar Tree) around the basket for the edge of the river. I also stapled them along the river on the wall. It added a nice pop and some texture. I used the wall, basket and baby as a visual during the lesson.

I purchased the double palm tree stand-up here. You can find the Egyptian princess graphic here. I purchased the Egyptian maid here. The free Miriam clipart is here (she's hiding on the bottom right).

This is the full wall with the palm tree I was given by Silk Plants Direct. I wanted to continue the Baby Moses theme wall with the Egyptian sand and this texture from the palm tree. I loved how it turned out!

I was given the single palm tree from Silk Plants Direct. Click here to see more and how I made the beautiful palm tree look taller and blend in with the design while adding awesome texture.

I also added a family wall to use with these lessons. I am personally not fond of walls like this, but I wanted to use my magnetic white board so I put Moses' family on one side. The Egyptian border is across the whole top of the wall. You can see the palm tree display. I created picture posters for each person we would be discussing. I could point and use the wall as another teaching visual. There are two different downloads for people on this wall. I had these printed on oversize paper to use as posters. These can be used for bulletin boards also.

1. Download includes Moses, his parents Aaron, Miriam & map. Click here to download.
2. Download includes Jethro, wife & son, Egypt and Midian. Click here to download.

3. Download includes FAMILY banner. Click here to download.
This takes 3 pages to create this banner that spells out MOSES in hieroglyphics.
4. Download the top banner that says MOSES in hieroglyphics. Click here to download.

I decided to create these crowns as a handout for this lesson. I know most kids love crowns and I needed/wanted a printable for this lesson. The Egyptian princess found Moses and named him. Hieroglyphics spell Moses. This includes color and black & white. Click here to download.

Paulette makes the application which is some type of game to review the lesson. For this one, she designed a crossword puzzle and enlarged it on a poster board. Just ask the questions to review and use a marker to write the answers on the poster board. They enjoyed it!

I created a crossword that you can use as a worksheet or as a template to make a poster board. First, count out the squares you will need, then draw straight lines up and across on the poster board lightly with a pencil. Then, using your template, mark the squares you need with a Sharpie maker. Add your numbers and lightly in pencil write out the words (if you want to) to make it easier while doing the review.

The download for the visuals include Moses' Birth, Burning Bush and Red Sea Crossing. I only included about 4 per lesson for VBS and did not include the Plagues since I have a separate pack just for that lesson. Click here to download the visuals.
This contains the same visuals as the above. They are changed to be black & white for printing. Click here to download the pictures to color.
You can see the full sets of visuals and pictures to color here.

A couple of us prefer to use these half page visuals for VBS. I print on cardstock, cut & laminate and put thin magnets on the back. They are easy to use on a magnetic board since they can be put up and taken down as needed. One of the label pages and at least one of the picture pages are the same throughout the 4 lessons. You can print one to use for all lessons; or print for each lesson to store all the needed pieces together. This includes the lessons with the corresponding numbers for the visuals.
