4.6. Jesus is Tempted

This continues our series learning about Jesus. This is week 6 in the fourth quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening.

Last week Jesus went to John at the Jordan River. Jesus asked John to baptize Him. After Jesus was baptized, Jesus went into the wilderness (desert).

Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights. That means He didn’t eat … anything.

After 40 days of not eating, Jesus was so hungry, and Satan came to tempt Him. Discuss how He must feel, tired, hot, miserable, etc.

Discuss temptation. What is temptation? (A temptation is wanting to do something that is wrong.) What is a temptation for the students? Satan tried to talk Jesus into doing things that would not make God happy.

#1 Satan told Jesus “If You are the Son of God, make these stones become bread.” Jesus told him that “People do not live by bread only. People should do what God tells them.”

#2 Satan took Jesus high up into the Holy City and put Him at the top of the temple. Satan told Jesus “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down and let the angels save You”.

Jesus answered this time by saying “The Word of God states ‘Do not tempt the Lord.’”

#3 As the final test, Satan took Jesus up to a really high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. Satan told Jesus that I will give You all these things if You will fall down and worship me.

Well, Jesus answered Satan by telling him: “Go away, Satan! The Word of God says, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve God only.”

Finally, Satan left Jesus and angels came and ministered to Him. Jesus said “NO!” to temptation. God wants you to say “No!” when anyone wants you to something wrong.

This can be used before the lesson to lead into the temptations of Jesus, or after to reinforce the lesson. For this lesson, we used it as a lead into the lesson. We asked different questions about things God approves of or doesn't, then could apply the fact that Jesus did what God wanted, even if it wasn't easy. Then, we used the review booklet above after the lesson.

These can be used for a lot of different lessons and age groups, but I decided to use them for the Temptation of Jesus. The directions are included in the download but ask questions and let the students hold up the correct face. Preschoolers have fun just trying to pick the correct face!
